At the Shared Identities – Identidades Compartidas event held in Évora from April 22 to 24, five workshops led by artists from Spain, Portugal, Hungary, and Germany were presented. As part of this program, José Manuel Barbero, a theater artist with the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Spain, led a session with first-grade students at the Escola Cruz da Picada.
The activity focused on building a shared identity based on each child’s tastes, interests, and personality. Throughout the session, the group had the opportunity to express what they like as individuals, recognize what sets them apart from others, and also think about what they can do together as a class. In this way, the workshop emphasized respect for differences and caring for one another in the classroom.
The activity allowed each person to express themselves independently while also participating in a collective creation. The session concluded with a combination of music, visual arts, and theater, designed to create something shared in which every child had a place and could be recognized within the group.
This work is part of the European project “Shared Identities,” coordinated by MUS-E Hungría and developed in collaboration with MUS-E Alemania, the Associação Yehudi Menuhin Portugal (AYMP) and the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Spain. Over the course of its 24-month duration, the project works in schools in Hungary, Germany, Portugal, and Spain on issues related to inclusion, diversity, and identity formation through various artistic disciplines.
