On April 23, in celebration of World Book Day, CEIP Vicálvaro held a special activity related to the Erasmus+ project “Shared Identities,” in which the school participates alongside schools from other European countries and which is coordinated by MUS-E Hungría in collaboration with various European organizations such as MUS-E Alemania, Associação Yehudi Menuhin Portugal and the Fundación Yehudi Menuhin España. Although the event was organized by the center itself in Madrid, it was based on the cultural exchange that has been developing with the project’s partner countries.
During the event, the children worked with various traditional stories and folktales from Germany, Portugal, Hungary, and Spain. Through these stories, they were able to learn about other cultures while strengthening their reading comprehension and creativity. From Germany, they read the well-known fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. From Portugal, the legend of the Rooster of Barcelos. From Hungary, Arnica, the Duck Princess, a traditional tale that was very well received in the classroom. And, representing Spain, they worked with adapted excerpts from Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes.
In addition to reading, various activities related to each story were carried out to deepen reading comprehension and cultural awareness. To wrap up the day, the children designed and created their own bookmarks inspired by the stories they had explored throughout the day.
All the activities and creations from Book Day were later displayed in the school’s Erasmus+ multicultural corner, a space dedicated to sharing experiences, ideas, and cultural elements from the countries participating in this initiative.
